Waarom kiezen voor onze bestemming?
Phuket was een tussenstation op de route tussen India en China waar zeevarenden stopten om te schuilen. Het eiland lijkt deel uit te maken van het Shivitische rijk (in het Thais de Tam Porn Ling genoemd) dat zich vestigde op het Maleisische schiereiland tijdens het eerste millennium na Christus. Later maakte het als Muang Takua-Thalang deel uit van een constellatie van twaalf steden. Het embleem van Phuket, waarmee het in die grotendeels voorgeletterde tijd bij anderen bekend was, was de hond. Tijdens de Sukhothai-periode werd Phuket geassocieerd met Takua Pah in de huidige provincie Phang-Nga, een ander gebied met uitgestrekte tinreserves. De Nederlanders vestigden een handelspost tijdens de Ayuthaya-periode in de 16e eeuw. De noordelijke en centrale regio's van het eiland werden toen bestuurd door de Thais, en het zuidelijke en westelijke deel werd overgedragen aan de tinhandel, een concessie in handen van buitenlanders.
