In 1862, Goldsboro was a vital link in the Confederacy's supply chain during the Civil War. The Union army engaged the South at the Battle of Goldsboro Bridge. Nearly 250 casualties resulted in the short-lived Union capture of the bridge. Today, the historic site is open to visitors for guided tours

Goldsboro used to be known as Waynesborough. When Wayne County was formed in 1789, the town of Waynesborough developed along the banks of the Neuse River, which was the main means of transporting people and freight into and out of the area.
