Election Platform & Invite

Our Election Platform is ready for consultation! Today we are sending our asks to all the parties and independents, seeking their commitment to improving housing affordability and addressing homelessness prior to the South Australian election in 2022. We were pleased to speak with Steph Richards from InDaily who was interested in improvements to the affordable homes program and published their article today.

The homes built and sold under the affordable homes program (Homeseeker SA) have a price point of up to $420,000 which is out of the financial reach of those who need a home the most. There is currently a requirement of 15% affordable homes for some developments. Shelter SA is proposing a strong structural reform to our inclusionary zoning policy to move away from home sales towards social housing AND to halt the loss of public land. When public land is developed or sold to private companies, taxpayers can and should expect a social return on their investment in the form of social infrastructure that includes social housing.

Inclusionary requirements are not a tax on development. They are an expected standard of
development similar to existing requirements for open spaces, water cycle management, parking, native vegetation and heritage protection.

Everyone can respond - all feedback is welcome via email. The due date is 24 September 2021. We will be publishing the responses from politicians and holding an online forum to hear from them directly. The forum will be held on Friday 22 October at 10.30 am and it is free but you must register to attend.

When you register for the forum you will be provided with an option to contribute a tax deductible donation to support our housing and homelessness advocacy, research and community engagement but if you do not wish to donate, please select General Admission. We look forward to sharing the results of our work with you!

It's Groundhog Day!
Tim Williams has written an excellent article on the reasons behind the housing crisis and says that they are very clear if you care to look, "It’s been Groundhog Day on the housing front: incentivising private housing output that makes property millionaires in our capital cities, keeps homeownership unachievable despite the blather to all those who cannot access the bank of mum and dad."

Our Work with Resthaven

We are pleased to let you know that we have been working with Resthaven contributing to the training of their home-care workers and raising awareness about housing affordability, the risk of homelessness (especially for vulnerable older people) and how to proactively prevent homelessness. Resthaven's initiative in recognising the complexities of precarious housing is welcome and provides a great example of our fee for service work and collaboration between Shelter SA and our members. Residential aged care and retirement villages are an important part of the housing system, especially when it comes to accommodating our older, vulnerable citizens. Resthaven recently shared an article about homelessness and their work with Shelter SA. Please contact us if your organisation would like to learn more about some of the skills and knowledge we have to share!
